Ruth Ju-Shih Li finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the National Art School, Darlinghurst (NAS) in 2013. Currently, she divides her time between Taiwan, her ancestral homeland, and China and Australia. She explores different ways of narrating both traditional and multicultural concepts of beauty, transcendence and the sublime as a cross-cultural language into the spiritual. She draws inspiration from her diverse cultural heritage, both philosophically and aesthetically, while also drawing from the language of dreams, myths and the idea of utopia. The layering of imagery becomes a metaphorical representation of the self to consider the transitory nature of human existence.
Since graduating, Li has exhibited her works in Sydney and internationally in Taiwan, China, Korea, and Thailand. Some notable exhibitions include The IAC Ceramics Generations exhibition at the National Taiwan University of Arts, Taiwan, and the Hua Hin International Contemporary Art exhibition in River City, Bangkok, Thailand. Li’s work is held in the collection of the Taoxichuan Museum, Jingdezhen, China, and in many private collections. She was a finalist in the North Sydney Art Prize in 2017 and won the Emerging Artists Prize in 2019. Li will continue to expand her list of exhibited countries to encompass Japan next year with an exhibition scheduled for the Kyoto Ceramics Centre in April of 2020. Li first showcased her work with MAY SPACE in Ceramic Revisions II in 2017 and is now a represented artist.
